DDOS attack - What can be done?

Hi guys,
Many times clients find their website down. On contacting the web host they come to know that their website is down because of DDOS attack. What exactly is this Distributed-Denial-of-Service attack? Marson(2002) states that distributed DoS attack occurs when a hacker hijacks machines across the Internet and uses them to send a flood of requests to a server until it becomes overwhelmed and stops functioning.
I am just wondering is ICMP blocking only the solution for this?

From what I've read about DDOS attacks (not too much but some), thats the only way.

Often, the requests sent are not ICMP, but valid HTTP traffic. Only hope is to firewall the responsible IPs, if you can't do that, kill the connection and wait. Hope that it stops. Cisco may have come up with something automated for blocking the offending IPs more effectively these days, I don't know.

the way that most people attack websites with a DDOS attack is by using hacked cisco routers to overflow the website's IP traffic or use bots that are setup on usually hundreds to thousands of hacked computers and have them all send traffic to your site, thus shutting it down.
This managment company is pretty good, im currently using them and they secure and take care of your server really well and they know what they are doing: http://www.platinumservermanagement.com/

If you look at the list of things they do to your server there is: "Anti-DoS configuration for APF Firewall - helps mitigate denial of service type attacks " so that might help you out. Also, I bet if you just contact them they might tell you what to do free of charge.
